Why I'm putting my body to the test for mental health

I'm taking part in the Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) annual Push-up Challenge between February 11-28, doing 2,000 pushups (or tricep dips or pull ups... basically anything that puts the weight of my body on my arms and builds strength).

Why 2,000? It represents the average number of people who die by suicide around the world every day. Woah, right? That's a lot. The average here in Canada is 12 people a day. That's 12 too many. Suicide is completely preventable. I know firsthand. Living with depressive disorder, I've experienced suicidal thoughts. It's scary, I know, and not just for me but for everyone who loves me. But I've been privileged to have love, support, and access to help when I need it. That's not the case for every one. CMHA wants to change that and make access to mental health care a universal human right in Canada. From advocating to decision makers to delivering services in over 330 communities across Canada, CMHA is fighting for mental health care access that's equal to physical health care. I've been working at CMHA for almost nine months now and not only has the work environment been good for my own mental health, every day I see how CMHA makes a difference for real people.

So while this physical challenge will be tough, I've survived tougher mental challenges. Please consider a donation as I slog through this physical test. Your donation will make a difference for real people who are struggling--people like me.
