Why Ellie Pushes for Better

13 Nov 2024

Ellie Hook 59, from Cambridge, Ontario, has witnessed the devastating impacts of mental ill-health first-hand, through the loss of a close family member’s daughter. Ellie signed up to The Push-Up Challenge in 2024 with her gym and loved working together towards a common goal to make a difference.

Why did you decide to sign up to The Push-Up Challenge?

My gym decided to create a team and participate in the Push Up Challenge. When I heard that the funds raised were supporting CMHA, I decided to join. I have been connected to CMHA Waterloo Wellington through some fundraising activities over the last few years and I believe the work they are doing is really important.

Why do you think it’s so important to push for better mental health in Canada right now?

I think that there are a lot of people struggling with their mental health in our community and across Canada. I have experienced the impacts of mental health in my life through the loss of a close family member’s daughter. I don’t want anyone else to experience the pain of that loss. People need to have access to mental health services when they need them. I am pushing for better mental health to raise funds to support people in my community.

What were some of the positive aspects of your experience with the Push-Up Challenge?

It was fun to do the challenge with other members at my gym. It was great to be a part of a team working together toward a common goal.

What would you say to someone who is considering taking part in The Push Up Challenge in 2025?

This is a great challenge – it is not just a physical challenge; you also learn ways to support your own mental health and wellness.

I loved doing this as part of a team. It’s an easy way to ask your friends and family to donate and support something that is important.

Through The Push Up Challenge, I am helping CMHA by building awareness and raising funds to support individuals in my community.

The Push-Up Challenge 2025 runs from Feb 11-28 and challenges participants to complete 2,000 push-ups (or a portion of this target), for the ~2,000 lives lost to suicide every day, worldwide.
